Sweden Income Tax Rates: 2018-2019 Historical Rates and 2026 Tax Guide
An explanation of Sweden's individual income tax, capital gains tax, corporate income tax and non-resident tax treatment, including the original 2018 rate information and current 2026 rules.
Important: The 2018-2019 figures below are historical. Do not apply them to income earned in 2026. Swedish income tax is calculated using separate municipal and national rules; individual circumstances, deductions and tax residence matter.
Sweden Income Tax Rates for 2018-2019: Historical Overview
The original article published the following simplified combined income tax bands for 2018. These figures are retained for historical reference, not as an exact calculation of Swedish tax. In practice, municipal rates, the basic allowance, age and other factors affected actual liability.
| Annual income (SEK), original historical presentation | Indicative combined rate |
|---|---|
| Up to 18,800 | 0% |
| 18,800 to 468,700 | 32% |
| 468,701 to 675,700 | 52% |
| Above 675,700 | 57% |
Historical caution: These bands are reproduced from the earlier page and are not an official uniform national tax table. Sweden's municipal tax is not a single 32% rate nationwide, and historical thresholds depend on the definition of taxable earned income.
Historical capital gains and company tax
| Tax category | 2018 figure | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Standard capital income tax | 30% | General tax on taxable capital income, subject to asset-specific rules. |
| Corporate income tax | 22% | Standard corporation tax rate for the 2018 period. |
Sweden Personal Income Tax Rates for 2026
Swedish tax on employment and other earned income generally combines municipal income tax with national income tax above a statutory threshold. Municipal rates differ by municipality, so there is no single national combined marginal-rate schedule.
| 2026 measure | Rate or threshold |
|---|---|
| Municipal income tax | Varies by municipality |
| National income tax on taxable earned income up to SEK 643,000 | 0% |
| National income tax on taxable earned income above SEK 643,000 | 20% on the excess |
| Gross-income breakpoint before basic allowance, under age 66 at start of year | SEK 660,400 |
| Gross-income breakpoint before basic allowance, age 66 or older at start of year | SEK 760,500 |
The basic allowance (grundavdrag) reduces earned income before the national tax threshold is applied. The breakpoint (brytpunkt) is the approximate gross annual earned-income amount at which the 20% national tax begins, taking the applicable basic allowance into account. Tax reductions, including employment-related credits, may further affect the final tax.

Sweden Capital Gains Tax in 2026
The general national tax rate on income from capital (inkomst av kapital) is 30%. This category includes many taxable interest receipts, dividends and gains from selling securities. The taxable amount and effective tax may differ for private residences, certain closely held company shares, investment savings accounts and other specially regulated assets.
For example, the tax treatment of a sale of a private residence is not necessarily a flat 30% of the full gain. The applicable inclusion rules, deductions and any permitted deferral must be examined separately.

Sweden Corporate Income Tax Rate in 2026
Sweden's standard corporate income tax rate is 20.6% of taxable corporate profit. This is lower than the 22% historical rate shown for 2018. Taxable profit is determined under the corporate income tax rules after applicable adjustments, deductions and loss provisions; the accounting profit alone does not determine tax payable.
Swedish companies are generally subject to corporate tax on their taxable profits. Foreign companies may be taxed on Swedish business profits attributable to a permanent establishment, subject to domestic law and applicable tax treaties.

Tax for Non-Residents: SINK in 2026
The Special Income Tax for Non-Residents (SINK) is a final withholding tax regime that can apply to qualifying Swedish-source employment income or pensions of individuals with limited tax liability. The ordinary SINK rate is 22.5% for income received from 1 January 2026, reduced from 25%. A further reduction to 20% is legislated for 2027. Special rules apply to seafarers and other circumstances.
Not all non-residents are automatically subject to SINK. Tax residence, the nature of the income, the duration of work in Sweden and applicable tax treaties must be assessed. In some circumstances, ordinary taxation can be elected instead.
