MP Police FIR Status Online: How to View and Get an FIR Copy in Madhya Pradesh

Learn how to check the status of a First Information Report (FIR), access an available FIR copy, and distinguish an FIR number from a complaint acknowledgement number using Madhya Pradesh Police citizen services.

Important: An online complaint acknowledgement is not automatically an FIR. FIR information and copies may be available through separate services, and access to some records may be restricted by law or investigation requirements.

How to check MP Police FIR status online

  1. Visit the official Madhya Pradesh Police Citizen Portal or follow the FIR Status link on an official district police website such as Jabalpur Police FIR Status.
  2. Register or sign in using the method shown on the portal. MP Police district guidance describes mobile OTP login as an available option.
  3. Select the relevant View FIR, FIR Status, or related citizen information service, depending on the current portal menu.
  4. Enter the requested identifiers, which may include district, police station, FIR number, year, or other verification details.
  5. Review the result and download or print a copy if the portal makes the record available to you.

Availability of search fields, authentication and downloads can change. If the online record is unavailable, contact the police station where the FIR was registered and request the information through the appropriate official channel.

How to track a police complaint using its reference number

The earlier MP Police website provided a Complaints section and a complaint-status search where the user entered a Complaint ID and selected Search Record. These older menu names and URLs may no longer work. Use the current citizen portal's complaint-tracking feature, if offered, or contact the relevant police station with your acknowledgement number.

  1. Keep the acknowledgement or complaint ID received after submitting the complaint.
  2. Sign in to the MP Police citizen portal and locate complaint tracking or complaint status.
  3. Enter the complaint ID and other details requested, then check the available response.
  4. If an FIR was subsequently registered, ask for the FIR number, police station and year, which are different from the initial complaint ID.

How to obtain an FIR copy

First check the View FIR service on the citizen portal. The Madhya Pradesh Government e-services directory also lists an online service for requesting a certified FIR copy. A certified copy and a publicly downloadable FIR image are not necessarily the same document.

Under Section 173(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS), a copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) must be given forthwith and free of cost to the informant or victim. If you are the informant or victim, you may request the statutory copy directly from the police station. Other applicants may be subject to separate access rules.

Relevant law: BNSS Section 173

The BNSS came into force on 1 July 2024 and generally replaced the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, subject to applicable transitional provisions. The following provisions are especially relevant:

  • Section 173(1) - Information about a cognizable offence: Information may be given orally or electronically irrespective of the area where the offence occurred (commonly called Zero FIR). Electronically communicated information must be signed within three days for it to be taken on record under this provision.
  • Section 173(2) - Free FIR copy: The informant or victim must be given a copy of the recorded information forthwith, free of cost.
  • Section 173(3) - Preliminary enquiry: For specified cognizable offences punishable with imprisonment of three years or more but less than seven years, a preliminary enquiry may be conducted within 14 days with prior permission from an officer not below the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Police, subject to the statutory conditions.
  • Section 173(4) - Refusal to record information: A person aggrieved by refusal may send the substance of the information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police; if the statutory remedy does not resolve the matter, an application may be made to the Magistrate.

Read the BNSS text hosted by the Bureau of Police Research and Development for the full wording and qualifications.

Frequently asked questions

Can I search an FIR without a complaint ID?

The FIR search may use the FIR number, district, police station and year. A complaint ID is generally used for a separate complaint-status service. Follow the actual fields shown by the current portal.

Is every FIR available for public download?

No. Online access depends on applicable rules, privacy protections and case-specific restrictions. The right of an informant or victim to receive a copy under Section 173(2) is distinct from public online publication.

What if the MP Police FIR portal is not working?

Try the official MP Police website or the concerned district police website, then contact the registering police station. For emergencies call 112; do not rely on a website form for urgent police assistance.
