Nagpur Police: How to Report and Trace a Lost or Stolen Mobile Phone

If your mobile phone is lost or stolen in Nagpur, report the incident promptly, secure your accounts, and use the Government of India's Sanchar Saathi CEIR service to request IMEI blocking and monitor your request. A CEIR status check is not the same as real-time location tracking or police investigation status.

Important: Suspected theft and an accidentally misplaced phone are not necessarily treated alike. An online lost-property report or CEIR request does not by itself establish that an FIR has been registered. For immediate danger, call 112.

Steps to report a lost or stolen phone in Nagpur

  1. Secure the device and accounts. Call your mobile operator to suspend the SIM, change important passwords, use your device manufacturer's find-device function where available, and notify your bank if payment applications could be accessed.
  2. Locate the IMEI. Use the handset box, invoice or purchase records. Dual-SIM phones may have two IMEI numbers. Do not publish IMEI numbers or personal details on social media.
  3. Report the incident to police. For suspected theft, approach the nearest police station or use the official Maharashtra Police Citizen Portal for available complaint services. Also consult Nagpur City Police. Keep the acknowledgement or FIR number. Online service availability and document requirements can change.
  4. Request IMEI blocking. Visit Sanchar Saathi and select the CEIR service, or open the official CEIR portal. Follow the current form instructions and upload the police report and proof of identity or ownership where requested.
  5. Check the CEIR request status. Use the request-status feature on CEIR with the request ID and other required details. Blocking helps prevent use of the handset on Indian mobile networks; it does not guarantee recovery.
  6. Follow up with police. Provide any lawful location information, serial numbers or recovery notifications to the investigating officer. If recovered, follow the CEIR unblocking process after confirming ownership and police requirements.

What is IMEI and how does mobile tracing work?

IMEI means International Mobile Equipment Identity, a unique identifier assigned to mobile equipment. The earlier Nagpur Police website described a search feature in which a user entered the IMEI and pressed Submit. That historical interface should not be assumed to remain available or to show the live location of a device.

The current national CEIR system is designed for blocking, tracing-related support and unblocking of lost or stolen devices. Public users can check their CEIR request status, while actual tracing and recovery depend on authorised processes. For current facilities use the official Sanchar Saathi website.

Applicable law: BNS and BNSS

Section 303 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023 (BNS) defines theft, broadly involving dishonest moving of movable property out of another person's possession without consent. A stolen mobile may fall within this provision depending on the facts. Section 304 BNS addresses snatching, where movable property is suddenly or forcibly seized or taken away from a person or their possession. Other provisions may apply depending on violence, threats or other circumstances.

Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) governs information about cognizable offences, including information given electronically subject to statutory signing requirements. It also permits information irrespective of the area where the offence occurred (commonly called Zero FIR). A free copy of the recorded information is to be supplied to the informant or victim. Section 174 BNSS concerns information relating to non-cognizable offences.

The BNS and BNSS generally took effect on 1 July 2024. For older incidents and pending proceedings, transitional and saving provisions may matter. Read the official statutes at India Code.

Frequently asked questions

Can I locate a stolen phone on a public IMEI map?

No official public CEIR map provides live location simply by entering an IMEI. Use your device's authorised find-device service, and share useful information with police.

Does CEIR blocking automatically create an FIR?

No. CEIR blocking and criminal reporting are separate processes. If theft is suspected, report it to police and request the appropriate acknowledgement or FIR copy.

What if the phone was only misplaced?

Use the available lost-property reporting process and CEIR guidance. If evidence of theft emerges, update the police with the facts.

What if my phone is recovered?

Inform police and follow the official CEIR unblocking instructions. Restore SIM and account access securely.
