What is an FIR?
A First Information Report (FIR) is the police record of information about the commission of a cognizable offence under Section 173 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS). A cognizable offence is one for which police may arrest without a warrant in accordance with law. An FIR number identifies the recorded case; a general complaint or service-request number may not.
How to download an FIR copy online in Arunachal Pradesh
- Visit the official Arunachal Pradesh Police website or go directly to the Citizen Portal.
- Choose Download FIR in Citizen Services. Register or sign in if the portal requests authentication.
- Enter the required case details. Keep the police station, FIR number and FIR registration year ready; follow the fields actually shown by the current portal.
- Submit the request or search and view the available FIR record. Download or save the copy if the portal makes it accessible.
- If no copy is available, contact the police station that registered the FIR or use the portal's complaint and contact facilities.
The National Government Services Portal also identifies the state's FIR-copy request as an online service requiring login.
How to check FIR or case status
The earlier Arunachal Police website offered a Crimes and Criminals menu with options such as Case Status, Crime Statistics, Rewarded Criminals, Wanted Criminals and Look Out Notice. Its historical search screen requested the police station, FIR number and year. The current interface may differ, so use the official website's Update/View FIR or citizen-service links rather than relying on the old menu labels.
Case status may describe the progress of a police record, but it should not be confused with the judicial status of a criminal case. For court proceedings, consult the relevant court's official case information system.
Legal rights under BNSS Section 173
Section 173(1): Recording information about cognizable offences
Information about a cognizable offence may be given orally or by electronic communication to the officer in charge of a police station, regardless of the territorial area where the offence occurred (commonly called Zero FIR). Information submitted electronically must be signed by the informant within three days to be taken on record under the provision.
Section 173(2): Free copy of the FIR information
A copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) must be supplied forthwith and free of cost to the informant or the victim. This statutory right does not depend on whether a public download link works.
Section 173(4): When the police refuse to record information
A person aggrieved by a refusal to record information under Section 173(1) may send the substance of that information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police concerned. If satisfied that it discloses a cognizable offence, the Superintendent may investigate personally or direct a subordinate officer to investigate; the aggrieved person may thereafter apply to the Magistrate.

Why an FIR may not appear online
Availability may be affected by login requirements, incomplete record synchronization, incorrect search details, or legal restrictions on disclosure. Sensitive cases, including certain sexual-offence cases, may not be suitable for public publication. If you are the informant or victim, request your statutory copy from the registering police station.
