Residents of Chennai (formerly Madras) and other districts of Tamil Nadu can use Tamil Nadu Police citizen services to check the status of a registered First Information Report (FIR). This guide explains the information normally needed for an FIR search, how to request a copy, and the legal rights of an informant or victim.
How to check Tamil Nadu Police FIR status online
- Open the official Tamil Nadu Police website and look for Citizen Services, FIR Status or the relevant CCTNS service.
- Select FIR Status. The older direct service address was Tamil Nadu Police FIR Status; if that page has moved, use the main official portal to find its current replacement.
- Choose the district or police commissionerate and the police station where the FIR was registered.
- Enter the FIR number and any additional registration details requested by the live form, such as the registration date, registration time or verification code.
- Submit the search and review any details that the portal makes available. If the record is not found, verify the particulars or contact the police station.

How to obtain a copy of a Tamil Nadu Police FIR
First check whether the official police portal offers a View FIR or FIR Copy facility. Where available, enter the required particulars and download or print the record. A public copy may not be available for sensitive or legally restricted cases.
If an online copy is unavailable, the informant or victim can request a copy from the police station where the FIR was recorded. Section 173(2) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS) requires a copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1) to be supplied forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim.
Legal provisions applicable to FIR registration and copies
Section 173(1), BNSS: Information in cognizable cases
This provision permits information about a cognizable offence to be given orally or through electronic communication, irrespective of the place where the offence occurred (the basis of Zero FIR). Oral information must be recorded and signed; electronically supplied information must be signed by the informant within three days for it to be taken on record.
Section 173(2), BNSS: Free FIR copy
The police must promptly give the informant or victim a free copy of the information recorded under Section 173(1). A portal not displaying the FIR does not eliminate this statutory entitlement.
Section 173(4), BNSS: Refusal to record information
Where a police station refuses to record information disclosing a cognizable offence, the aggrieved person may send the substance of the information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police concerned. If necessary, the person may subsequently approach the Magistrate under the applicable procedure.
Section 193(9), BNSS: Investigation progress
The police officer must inform the informant or victim of the progress of investigation within ninety days, by any means including electronic communication. This is distinct from the availability of a live online tracking screen.

What if FIR status is not available online?
Check the police district, station, FIR number and registration details carefully. A missing online result does not establish that no FIR exists. Publication may be delayed or restricted, and the portal may be temporarily unavailable. Contact the investigating officer or station for clarification. For immediate danger or emergencies, call 112 rather than relying on an online status service.
