Telangana Police Transferred FIR Case Status Online: How to Search
A transferred police case may be difficult to trace if its original FIR number or police station has changed. This guide explains how to search the official Telangana Police case-status service, identify the receiving police station, and request an FIR copy or an investigation update.
What is a transferred FIR or police case?
A transferred case is a criminal matter forwarded from one police station or investigating unit to another, generally because of territorial jurisdiction or an administrative or investigative decision. The receiving station may use a different reference number. A transfer is not, by itself, proof that an FIR has been cancelled or that an investigation has concluded.
How to check Telangana Police case status online
- Open the Telangana State Police website and look for Citizen Services, or use the direct case-status page.
- Select the district and police station associated with the FIR. For a transferred case, try the receiving police station if the transfer details are known.
- Enter the FIR number and the on-screen verification text, then submit the search.
- Review the available case information. If no record is found, verify the FIR year or number from your records and contact the original or receiving police station to confirm the current reference number.
- For an FIR copy, use the official View FIR service, subject to its access and disclosure rules.
The actual portal fields and results may change. An online record may not show every investigation step, and some FIRs are withheld from public display for legal or privacy reasons.
Earlier Cyberabad Police transferred-case search procedure
The original guide described a Cyberabad Police interface with Citizen Services, Know Your Case Status, Online Case Status and a separate link labelled "Click here for transferred cases". Users selected the place from which the case was transferred, entered a crime number and FIR date, and clicked Search. These are archival screenshots, not a confirmed current workflow.
Screenshots retained from the original article for identification only. Use the current official Telangana Police portal rather than relying on the old Cyberabad URLs.
Applicable law: FIR registration, transfer and progress updates
Section 173, Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023 (BNSS)
Section 173 governs information about cognizable offences. Under subsection (1), information may be given to a police station regardless of where the offence occurred, including by electronic communication subject to the statutory signature requirement. This is the basis for recording information even where another police station may ultimately investigate, commonly called a Zero FIR. Under subsection (2), a copy of information recorded under subsection (1) must be given forthwith, free of cost, to the informant or victim.
Section 175 and Section 176, BNSS
Section 175 deals with police powers to investigate cognizable cases; Section 176 addresses the procedure for investigation, including reporting to the Magistrate in the circumstances specified by law. The appropriate investigating police station and jurisdiction should be confirmed from the police record rather than inferred solely from an online transfer status.
Section 193(3)(ii), BNSS: progress of investigation
The police officer must inform the informant or victim of the progress of investigation within 90 days, including by electronic communication, in the manner provided by law. This statutory duty is distinct from the availability of a public online status tracker.
Older cases under the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973
The BNSS came into force on 1 July 2024. Proceedings and investigations pending immediately before its commencement may continue under the savings provision in Section 531; the applicable procedural law depends on the facts and timing of the case. The earlier FIR registration provision was Section 154 of the CrPC.
Read the BNSS on India Code and the Ministry of Home Affairs new criminal laws collection.
What if a transferred case is not found?
- Keep the original FIR or crime number, FIR date, police station name and any transfer acknowledgment.
- Ask the original police station for the receiving station's name and current FIR or case reference.
- Contact the receiving station or investigating officer and request an update using the current reference.
- If the matter has reached court, use the relevant court's official case-search facility; police investigation status and court case status are different records.
- If police refuse to record information concerning a cognizable offence, Section 173(4) BNSS provides a route to send the substance of the information in writing to the Superintendent of Police; further statutory remedies may be available.
Frequently asked questions
Can I search using the old FIR number?
Try the original number first, but a receiving police station may have a different reference. Confirm it with the police if the online search fails.
Does a transfer mean the FIR is closed?
No. Transfer and closure are different steps. Obtain the current status from the investigating police station or the relevant court record.
Is an FIR copy free?
Section 173(2) BNSS provides a free copy of the recorded information to the informant or victim. Public portal access to copies may be restricted for sensitive cases.
