How to search or download an FIR in Haryana
- Open the official Haryana Police website and navigate to Citizen Services.
- Select FIR Download, View FIR or the equivalent FIR search option shown on the current portal.
- If prompted, sign in or complete the verification process.
- Enter the available search details: FIR registration year, district and police station. Where requested, provide the FIR number or month of registration.
- Choose Search and review the matching record, if available. Open, print or save the copy where the portal offers that function.
- If no result appears, check the spelling, police station, district and year. Contact the police station or the relevant district police office for help.
The previous Haryana Police search interface used year, district and police station as principal search fields; month and FIR number were optional in that version. Current fields, login requirements and search controls may differ.

Legal right to obtain a copy of an FIR
Section 173(1), Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023
This provision governs information relating to a cognizable offence, meaning an offence for which a police officer may arrest without warrant in accordance with the applicable law. Information may be given orally or by electronic communication, irrespective of where the offence occurred (commonly called a Zero FIR). Electronic information must be signed by the informant within three days for it to be taken on record.
Section 173(2): Free FIR copy for the informant or victim
Under Section 173(2) of the BNSS, a copy of information recorded under Section 173(1) must be supplied forthwith and free of cost to the informant or victim. This right is distinct from general public access to FIRs through an online portal.
Section 173(4): Refusal to record information
If the officer in charge refuses to record information about a cognizable offence, the aggrieved person may send the substance of that information in writing and by post to the Superintendent of Police concerned. If the statutory route does not resolve the matter, an application may be made to the Magistrate as provided by law.
For the enacted provisions, consult the National Crime Records Bureau BNSS text and the Bureau of Police Research and Development criminal law resources.
Why an FIR may not be visible online
A missing online result does not necessarily mean that an FIR has not been registered. The record may not yet be published, the search details may be incorrect, or disclosure may be restricted because of the nature of the case, privacy, investigation requirements or applicable legal directions. Sensitive FIRs, including certain sexual offence cases, are not generally available for unrestricted public access.
Where an online copy is unavailable, the informant or victim should request a copy from the police station under Section 173(2). Other persons seeking case records may need to follow the applicable legal process.
FIR copy versus FIR status
An FIR copy reproduces the registered first information. FIR status refers to progress or recorded case information, which may not be publicly accessible in full. Downloading an FIR does not by itself establish whether an investigation is complete, whether a charge-sheet has been filed or whether a court has decided the case.
Keep the FIR number, registration date, district and police station details ready when following up with the investigating officer or citizen services portal.
